Cities Made of Water
December 7, 2017
In the fishing village of San Andres, Isla Verde, a man brings his infant granddaughter out to the beach to enjoy the sunset and the rising evening breeze. Isla Verde sits in the middle of the Verde Island Passage, a narrow body of water believed to be the "center of the center of marine biodiversity in the world;" marine scientists only recently discovered that the Philippine seas are home to more species of marine life, including corals, than anywhere else on Earth, a vital sanctuary that helps to spawn fish populations throughout the world's oceans. The villagers like to come out at this time of the day to take walks, sit and chat, or play along the coastline in the late afternoon as the sun sets, illustrating how the sea that sustains these simple fisherfolk is also where they seek enjoyment, companionship, and rest.
