Cities Made of Water
August 14, 2018
Brothers and shrimp catchers Tom and Roldan de Guzman proudly hold the fighting roosters that they bred themsleves, while the two sons of Roldan, RC and Bok, play along the shoreline of Pantihan, Batangas. Not visible in the photo, submerged in the ocean behind them, are the crab farming cages left over from a failed government livelihood project. The ocean is rough and muddied by a recent storm that flooded this coastline and claimed the life of a fisherman. Fisherfolk communities such as these are especially vulnerable to the intensifying, increasingly unpredictable storms that scientists now believe are directly related to the climate crisis.
