MediaStorm Welcomes Summer Intern Arkasha Stevenson

MediaStorm is excited to welcome Arkasha Stevenson to our team as our Summer 2013. Arkasha Stevenson is a photojournalist currently based in Los Angeles. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina in December 2010. While attending school, she documented issues in the rural South, such as drug addiction and prostitution in Durham, N.C., and child care in Elizabethtown, Ky. For the last year and a half Stevenson has worked as a photography and video intern at the Los Angeles Times. During her internship she has had the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of subjects, including the Occupy movement, the remote desert squatter camp of Slab City and the Coachella Music Festival, and has been sent internationally to follow the Stanley Cup. MediaStorm Welcomes Spring Interns Josh Davis and Jon Kasbe

MediaStorm is excited to welcome Josh Davis and Jon Kasbe to our team as Spring 2013 interns. Joshua Davis is an award-winning multimedia journalist and documentary videomaker. He recently earned his master's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he produced his multimedia thesis, The Undocumentary, about the immigrant rights movement. The project received multiple honors in the 67th College Photographer of the Year Awards, and it was recognized in the 2012 FotoWeekDC International Awards Competition. Last summer, Joshua served as the managing editor of 100 Gallons, a 2012 special report about water for Powering A Nation. Joshua previously freelanced in New York and Washington, D.C., where he worked on projects for PBS Frontline, RollingStone.com, The New York Times, Arte, the Travel Channel, and nonprofit organizations. He has served as adjunct faculty at New York University, coached the 2012 Carolina Photojournalism Workshop and taught courses as an Apple Certified Final Cut Pro editing instructor.…

MediaStorm Welcomes Taylor Buley

MediaStorm is excited to welcome Taylor Buley to the MediaStorm staff as a developer. Taylor Buley is a developer/journalist specializing in JavaScript. He studied Philosophy, Politics & Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and got his masters in Communication from Stanford. He started his career as a fact-checker at Forbes Magazine, where he later became a staff writer and developer and reported from Silicon Valley. Previous to Forbes, where he became a lead editorial developer, he was a Robert L. Bartley fellow at The Wall Street Journal's Editorial Page, a Burton C. Gray intern at Reason magazine and interned for the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Why We Switched to a Pay Per Story Model

Today we launched two new MediaStorm stories. We worked on these projects for almost a year and everyone on the staff contributed to them. Over the past seven years, we’ve done this countless times: used our resources to produce something we believed in, then distributed the final product freely on the Web. As an early producer of online documentary multimedia, our primary mission has been to raise awareness about important issues through a robust social media network. We’ve also tried to create a model that others could use so that more storytellers could harness the medium to effect change. By distributing our stories for free, we’ve been able to reach millions of viewers and bring attention to important causes ranging from climate change to conflict resolution. We are excited to welcome Pam Huling and Tim McLaughlin to MediaStorm. Pam will lead our Business Development efforts, and Tim, or first intern back in 2008, returns as a Multimedia Producer. Prior to joining MediaStorm, Pam Huling owned Gaslight Media Consulting, LLC, with clients in Switzerland and New York City. She currently serves on the Executive Board of EZArchive, Inc. and Our Favorite Moments, which are online subscription-based cloud services for consumers. As the former Director of Photo Services at Discovery Communications, Inc., the #1 non-fiction media company in the world, Huling oversaw more than 400 photo and multimedia shoots each year on location around the world, the licensing of millions of dollars in stock content and the management of more than one million media assets.
