Beginning Sunday, April 27th, 2014, UnionDocs will present a nuts-and-bolts professional development series designed for the beginning or intermediate documentary filmmaker. Documentary Fundamentals @ UnionDocs is a six-week course culminating in a certificate of completion. UnionDocs Collaborative Studio Calls for Applicants

The UnionDocs Collaborative Studio (CoLAB) is now accepting applications for a 10-month program for a select group of media artists from the U.S. and abroad. Based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, CoLAB offers a platform for exploring contemporary approaches to the documentary arts and a process for developing an innovative collaborative project. Program Description The program consists of weekly production meetings, seminars, screenings and other public programs, along with regular masterclasses and critiques with visiting artists. A primer for nonfiction filmmakers looking to expand into interactive storytelling. This workshop surveys trends in interactive documentary, introduces new technologies being used, and provides a “how-to” for starting and conceptualizing interactive projects. Intimacy in Multimedia with UnionDocs

Every storyteller knows that at the heart of a good story is empathy. But getting your interviewee to open up is sometimes easier said than done. Multimedia journalists Marcus Yam (The Home Front), Maisie Crow (Half-Lives: The Chernobyl Workers Now), and Béatrice de Géa (NYT: When illness makes a spouse a stranger) will discuss the delicate balance of getting intimate with your subject, how to navigate boundaries once you’re embedded in someone else’s life, and how they go about achieving a deep level of intimacy.
