An Uncensored Look Into Life in the Ku Klux Klan

The son of an Imperial Wizard of a North Carolina based Klan realm. (Anthony Karen)

Gaining access to secretive pockets of society is based on trust. It’s that trust that photographer Anthony Karen sees as the foundation of photojournalism. “It’s a moment that’s constantly validated, the wordless acceptance into someone’s personal space with a camera,” Karen wrote to Slate.

After documenting Vodou rituals in Haiti, Skinheads, and the Westboro Baptist Church, Karen finds himself accepted by the Ku Klux Klan. He began photographing the Klan in 2005, after reaching out to members through phone numbers and e-mails listed on websites. After earning their trust, he was allowed unrestricted access to photograph.

Bob Baxter – $2,000 Named for a New Jersey photographer who was paralyzed in an auto accident but continued to pursue photojournalism education. Baxter set up this scholarship before his death. Infected or Affected: A Photographer’s Multimedia Project

Matthew Lloyd, a London-based editorial and commercial photographer, recently went to South Africa to create a project about AIDS for Bishop Simeon Trust. He’s mainly a still photographer and didn’t originally intend for the project to be multimedia heavy. When he arrived to shoot though, Lloyd felt multimedia was the right medium for the project. The project he created, Infected or Affected is a moving multimedia piece that puts a face on the harsh statistics that are a reality in South Africa today: One in two women are raped, one in three girls complete secondary school, 12 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS. Having done only some short multimedia pieces in the past, this piece is the first in-depth multimedia project in his portfolio. Good news for anyone considering applying to this year's Ian Parry Scholarship: The Ian Parry Scholarship 2010 deadline has been extended to Friday 9th July 10am (UK Time). Applications are digital. FTP instructions and application forms are available from www.ianparry.org The Ian Parry Scholarship is designed to award young photojournalists with a bursary that will enable them to undertake a chosen project and raise their profile in the international photographic community. The Scholarship is aimed at traditional or contemporary photojournalism and photographers with strong story telling capabilities. Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died whilst on assignment for the Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years old.
