Operation Azra Exhibit and Online Print Auction

Renowned photojournalists from around the world, from prestigious publications such as National Geographic, VII, Time, Newsweek and the New York Times, are donating signed, museum-quality prints to Operation Azra, an exhibition and online print auction to benefit victims of acid burning in Pakistan. Proceeds from the auction will go to support female victims of this terribly violent act and to raise awareness about a fate inflicted on many women in Pakistan. Marked with dishonor and often excluded by family, their disfigurment often forces them to the edges of society. Bidding via the online auction opens midnight EDT June 6, 2007 and closes midnight EDT July 1, 2007. Magnum Festival

Magnum Photos is hosting the month-long Magnum Festival in NYC to celebrate their 60th Anniversary. Throughout June, they have partnered with several museums and theatres to show over 30 photo exhibits and over 40 documentary film screenings. There will also be panel discussions, book signings, portfolio reviews, and gatherings. Coming up this weekend: several members of Magnum will be discussing the Future of Photojournalism, at the Walter Reade Theatre, Sunday June 3, 2pm. Soul of Athens

With the outstanding Soul of Athens project, the students of the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University, led by Zach Wise of digitalartwork.net and Brian Storm of MediaStorm.org, have created an impressive multimedia document of the Athens, Ohio community. With a diverse group of more than 25 stories, produced in multiple mediums and wrapped up in a beautifully designed and architeted site interface, this remarkable project is an excellent example of the power of multimedia storytelling. Truly inspiring work!

Eugene Richards Awarded First National Geographic Grant

National Geographic Magazine has awarded its first ever $50,000 Grant for Photography to Eugene Richards, for his project on veterans of the War in Iraq. The grant was open to all professional photojournalists and will be awarded annually. Entrants were required to submit a statement describing a proposed or current essay, along with a portfolio. The winner was chosen by a panel including Jodi Cobb, a National Geographic Photographer, Michele Stephenson, the former Director of Photography at Time and Michel du Cille, a staff photographer at the Washington Post. Upcoming Photography Application Deadlines

The following is a list of upcoming application deadlines for photography workshops, awards and scholarships: May 14: Eddie Adams Workshop Application Applications are now being accepted to the 2007 Eddie Adams Workshop, Barnstorm, held annually in Jeffersonville, N.Y. Barnstorm is tuition-free, and sponsored by Nikon, Inc. This year's Barnstorm will be held October 5 to 8, and applicants will be notified in July. May 15: Inge Morath Prize Magnum Photos is accepting entries for the fifth Inge Morath Prize, which is awarded to a woman photographer under 30 years of age.
