Not Forgotten

Will Yurman of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle turned a daily assignment covering a memorial service into a year-long project exploring the lives behind the statistics. To create Not Forgotten, last year he visited the families of every homicide victim and created short multimedia portraits of those who had been killed. One good thing about living in Rochester, New York is that all the homicides fit in a single flash window. But bravo for imagining the people behind the numbers and chasing down every story.

The Ninth Floor by Jessica Dimmock Hidden in an elegant building in a wealthy Manhattan neighborhood, was a sprawling apartment filled with young drug addicts. The Ninth Floor is the story of their battle with addiction, each other, and themselves as they search for some kind of redemption.    MediaStorm Store Launches DVDs of The Ninth Floor and many other MediaStorm projects are now available for purchase via the MediaStorm Store. The Boy in the Moon

The Globe and Mail recently published the 2nd of 3 parts of The Boy in the Moon- an intimate glimpse into writer Ian Brown's family life and daily struggle to care for his son with CFC, a rare genetic disorder. The story is an exceptional first-hand piece, told through videos, photos, audio, and accompanying articles. The final part will be published on Saturday, December 15.

Dail: Life Unbarred

With the relatively recent advances in DNA technology, there have been significant numbers of inmates released from wrongful imprisonment. The News & Observer spent some time with one man, Dail, who was imprisoned when he was 20 for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl. 18 years later, the North Carolina Actual Innocence Commission found that not all of the evidence had been destroyed, DNA testing pointed to another man, and Dail was freed. Photographer/Videographer Shawn Rocco, along with several others from the News & Observer, put together a nice multimedia piece, with several additional videos, photo galleries, and other material.

Vindicated by DNA

New York Times reporters spent over 3 months interviewing dozens of prisoners who have been exonerated by DNA evidence since 1989. The result was published this past Sunday, and is well worth checking out. The project includes an article along with audio interviews and profiles with freed inmates, and a multimedia look at the first year of freedom for one of the former inmates. Not only is this an important story, it's a great example of storytelling across multiple mediums.
