The Crisis Guide was awarded in the category for New Approaches to News and Documentary Programming: Current News Coverage in the 33rd Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards. A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan, produced with photographer Seamus Murphy of VII photo agency, was also nominated in the New Approaches to News and Documentary Programming: Documentaries category. Mediastorm Receives Two Emmy Nominations

A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan produced with photographer Seamus Murphy is a nominee in the New Approaches to News and Documentary Programming: Documentaries category. MediaStorm Releases New Client Project for the United Nations Forum on Forests

We are pleased to release Finding Balance: Our Future, Our Forests, produced in collaboration with the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) for the upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. Part of the UNFF’s mission is to change the way policymakers view forest-related issues. Previously forest preservation was considered an environmental issue. In order to create more lasting and far-reaching change, the UNFF believes it is necessary to also include social and economic values in discussions about forest preservation. Forests are, in many complicated ways, interconnected with the lives of people and cultures. MediaStorm worked with UNFF to create a piece that shows the landscape view of this issue, including why forests are important, why they are under threat, what is at stake, and what might be the solution.

Refugees United and MediaStorm launch “Lost and Found: The Story of Refugees United”

Refugees United commissioned MediaStorm to create a documentary that both told the story of Refugees United, as well as chronicled the lives of refugees that are currently separated from their family. They wanted to portray the universality of the issue that they deal with and show the heartache and struggle these people face as they are separated from and searching for their lost loved ones. Following the lives of four refugees and how separation from loved ones has shaped their existence, “Lost and Found: The Story of Refugees United” is a journey into the hardships so many families must endure as they seek to reconnect.

W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund launches new website

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund unveiled its newly revamped Website today at www.smithfund.org. The portal, redesigned by MediaStorm — incorporating the MediaStorm Player — provides an expanded selection of work from the 33 past recipients of the grant as well as easier site navigation, streamlined online registration for grant applicants, and thumbnail histories of photojournalist W. Eugene Smith, the fund itself, and the Howard Chapnick grant. (The deadline for the 2011 grant has been extended to Friday, June 3rd.) The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography--considered by many to be the most prestigious, long-standing honorarium for completion of a photojournalistic project--was created in 1979, a year after Smith’s death. The grant’s mission is to support and encourage photographers producing humanistic photo stories in the tradition of the legendary American photo essayist who sought to expose the truth about issues affecting and afflicting humankind.
