Cardiff University Now Offering Computational Journalism Masters Program

In September, Cardiff University will introduce a new Computational Journalism Master's degree in an effort to supply the industry with more journalists with coding abilities. The United Kingdom-based school was motivated to offer the new program after various professionals in the digital journalism field expressed a need for graduates with skill sets that straddle the fields of journalism and computing. Cardiff joins US colleges, like Columbia University, who have launched similar programs. This area "doesn't replace traditional journalism," Richard Sambrook, a professor of journalism at Cardiff University told Journalism.co.uk. "But there is a market now for people able to code and understand core principles of journalism as well." And for those with an entrepreneurial edge, gaining such skills can support their quest to explore new ideas or ventures, he added, as "the industry is wide open to that at the moment". Webby Awards Honors ‘Surviving the Peace,’ ‘Swan Song,’ and ‘2013 ICP Infinity Awards’

Call for Proposals: Alexia Foundation 2014 Women’s Initiative Grant

The Alexia Foundation announced the call for entries for their 2014 Women’s Initiative Grant which will provide a $25,000 grant for a project to be produced on a significant issue involving and affecting women. Any photojournalist from anywhere in the world is eligible to submit a proposal by June 30, 2014.

NPPA Best of Photojournalism Awards 2014 Announced

MediaStorm is proud to announce that our video series for the International Center of Photography's 29th Annual Infinity Awards has been awarded Honorable Mention in the Best of Photojournalism Visual Column category. First place is MediaStorm contributor Scott Strazzante of the Chicago Tribune for "Shooting From The Hip." Second place is Barbara Davidson of the Los Angeles Times for Framework, and third place is Michele McNally and the staff of The New York Times for the LENS blog. MediaStorm was also awarded Honorable Mention in the Documentary Multimedia Story category for "Swan Song." The BoP Awards honored many excellent multimedia pieces this year. First place in the Multimedia Story category went to Rick Loomis of the Los Angeles Times for "A Soldier's Wife." Second place is The New York Times for "Invisible Child: Dasani's Homeless Life." A story called "The Jockey" by Chang W.
