“The Long Night” Screens at Paley Center

On Wednesday night, influencers in media and activism gathered at the Paley Center for Media to celebrate the first private screening of The Long Night. MediaStorm’s first feature-length film and the first project funded by the Alexia Foundation’s Women’s Initiative grant, The Long Night is a shining example of both organizations’ commitment to driving change through the power of storytelling.

“When we first started working on this film, we thought we were producing a 10-minute piece about domestic minor sex trafficking in our country today,” executive producer Brian Storm said while introducing the film. “We quickly realized that this story was too big and too important to try to fit into that framework.”

  • The Student Winner will receive funding for a semester at the Syracuse University London Program, a $1,000 cash grant to help produce the proposed body of work, a $300 gift card from Dury’s Photo and $500 will be awarded to that student’s academic department. Student awards will also be awarded to a Second Place Winner, and three Award of Excellence Winners.

Vinay Jawahar’s People Like Us

After growing up Bombay, India and spending several years studying and working in the United States, Vinay Jawahar returned to India with his camera to find something.

“I toyed with the idea of ‘Invisible India’ or, less dramatically, ‘The India You Missed While You Were at The Mall’,” he tells The Boston Coffee House. “Something really didactic and embarrassingly unsubtle about the India eclipsed by gated communities, swanky (and less than swanky) malls, and gleaming office towers. A second (and secondary) instinct was to tease out a technical or, if I were feeling truly bold, an artistic narrative.”

While those stories are told, Jawahar’s photo essay ultimately documents something more fundamental – memory of a simpler time.

“These photographs remind me that that country [I remember] is still a reality,” said Jawahar.
