Call for applications: Documentary Workshop in the Mississippi Delta

Barefoot Workshops has announced a call for applications for a 2 Week Documentary Workshop in The Mississippi Delta, beginning February 17th, 2008. This 2-week DV workshop is designed for photojournalists who are looking to make the move to videojournalism and the web, new documentary filmmakers who want to launch their careers in web and television documentaries and for those with experience in some aspects of filmmaking that are looking to expand their skill, understanding and mastery of the whole process. Producers, cinematographers, editors and writers with narrative experience who are considering working in non-fiction filmmaking are also encouraged to enroll. This workshop is ideal for working professionals who want to develop important skills, which will allow them to work with other filmmakers.   Students will learn all aspects of the process including the importance of the still image, DV camera, compact lighting methods, field sound, field editing and how to weave the story.…

Robert Frank Film Festival

If you’re in Santa Fe, NM from August 3-5, you can check out the Robert Frank Film Festival, put on by Center and the Film Center at Cinemacafé. While many people know Frank for his still images, notably ‘The Americans’, he was also very interested in using films as a means to express what he could not say in a still image. He made over 25 films in his lifetime. The Festival will show 12 of the films over the 3 days, and his complete film works will be available on DVD at the site (or, you can pre-order the DVD through photo-eye)

Mountain Workshops Now Accepting Applications

Applications are now being accepted for the Mountain Workshops, taking place this year in Danville, KY. Applicants can choose from one of three tracks: The Photojournalism Workshop, The Picture Editing Workshop, or The Multimedia Workshop. All three tracks are sure to provide a great experience. All of the Workshops start on October 17, and spaces are limited (The Multimedia Workshop only has 8 open spots, so if you’re interested get your information in soon.) Faculty for 2007 Photojournalism Workshop includes Renee Byer, Rick Loomis, Mary Calvert, Josh Meltzer, Jonathan Newton, and Charles Bertram. While The Mountain Workshops have had a multimedia staff and produced several pieces over the last several years, this is the first year that there is a Workshop track specifically focusing on Multimedia. Whether you’re currently a student or a seasoned professional looking for a few tips or something new, there are a lot of options out there, ranging from online courses to intensive training sessions. News University offers online journalism training. Courses cover a broad range of topics, including leadership and management; reporting, writing and editing; broadcast; online; ethics; visual journalism; and journalism education. Many of their courses are free and self-directed. News University is a joint project between the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Poynter Institute. Speaking of Poynter- if you’d rather attend a “live” course, the Poynter Institute has seminars in St. Petersburg, FL, throughout the year covering many of those same topics. Classes are kept small and focused, with both Poynter faculty and working journalists coming in to teach.
