Patrick Raycraft

Photojournalist, Educator
Methodology 24: December 2019
Workshop Participant

Patrick Raycraft is an instructor in the Department of Communication at Central Connecticut State University where he teaches digital photography, digital film production, and television studio production. He is currently developing a new multimedia course for the spring semester. Previously, he worked for twenty years as a staff photographer at the Hartford Courant where his responsibilities also included video journalism, picture editing, and reporting. Early in his career, Raycraft served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic. He has a B.A. in Spanish from Hamilton College and an M.A. in Photography from Ohio University. At the Hartford Courant, Raycraft chronicled Connecticut’s vibrant Latino community and produced picture stories from his coverage in Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Haiti. “Healing Haiti”, an audio slideshow of the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, was featured online by Vermont Public Radio. His photographs have also appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Ebony, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, Sojourners, and HuffPost. He has served as a photojournalism instructor with Internews. Raycraft is a trained medical interpreter who occasionally participates in triathlons. He resides in Hartford’s Frog Hollow neighborhood.

Patrick participated in the December 2019 MediaStorm Methodology Workshop. He had the following to say about his experience:

This workshop has really empowered me to navigate my recent career transition from news photographer to university instructor. Brian Storm offered both practical and philosophical advice and suggestions which exceeded my expectations. For example, I learned a lot from how Brian patiently walked us through film sequences, interviews, and the challenges of several MediaStorm projects. We all profited from spirited discussions – ranging from ethics to gear - whether inside the classroom or walking along the sidewalks of DUMBO. It’s great to have established new bonds and friendships with MediaStorm classmates who, at varying points in their own careers, all share a similar passion and sense of purpose. Brian’s openness, eloquence, and honesty coupled with his repeated clear examples and anecdotes took me to the heart of MediaStorm’s mission to give subjects a strong voice in their own story.
