In short, it will save your bacon.<\/p>\n<p>The vault works by saving an entire copy of your Final Cut Pro project file at a regular, user-determined interval.<\/p>\n<p>This post will explain how to set up your Autosave Vault, copy items from a backup to your working project as well as replace your FCP file with a backup file.<\/p>\n<h1>Setting Up the Autosave Vault<\/h1>\n<p>From the <strong>Final Cut Pro<\/strong> menu choose <strong>System Settings (Shift-Q)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1_lpx91Hgq6-_7h8notRcuwRYivGgXuk.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7453\" title=\"Autosave Vault Image 1\" src=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1_lpx91Hgq6-_7h8notRcuwRYivGgXuk.png\" alt=\"Autosave Vault Image 1\" width=\"578\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1_lpx91Hgq6-_7h8notRcuwRYivGgXuk.png 578w, https:\/\/www.mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1_lpx91Hgq6-_7h8notRcuwRYivGgXuk-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Click<\/strong> the <strong>Autosave Vault: Set&#8230;<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p>Select a directory to save your backup files. It\u2019s important to set your backups to a different drive than your actual assets. That way, if your media drive dies you still have access to these files.<\/p>\n<p>Next, from the <strong>Final Cut Pro<\/strong> menu choose <strong>User Preferences (Option-Q)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/19H1rF_N1Am78RSVz-BSGLi5inkZHwHI.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7455\" title=\"Autosave Vault Image 2\" src=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/19H1rF_N1Am78RSVz-BSGLi5inkZHwHI.png\" alt=\"Autosave Vault Image 2\" width=\"578\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/19H1rF_N1Am78RSVz-BSGLi5inkZHwHI.png 578w, https:\/\/www.mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/19H1rF_N1Am78RSVz-BSGLi5inkZHwHI-300x220.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOn the<strong> General <\/strong>tab<strong>, check<\/strong> the <strong>Autosave Vault<\/strong> checkbox to turn the vault on.<\/p>\n<p>MediaStorm saves a new backup every 10 to 15 minutes. This way, if there\u2019s a problem we\u2019ll lose only a few minutes of work.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Keep at most<\/strong> option, determines how many backup files FCP will save. Once Final Cut has reached the maximum, it will begin to delete the oldest files.<\/p>\n<h1>Copying Items from a Backup to Your Working Project<\/h1>\n<p>Sometimes you may need to copy just a sequence or two from a backup file to your main FCP project.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, make sure your <strong>working FCP project<\/strong> is <strong>open<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, open your <strong>Autosave Vault<\/strong> in the <strong>Finder<\/strong>. Each file is labeled with your project name and a timestamp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1yQc92UeqQHKsfgAr5W2_VtO0DHzMeCQ.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7457\" title=\"Autosave Vault Image 3\" src=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1yQc92UeqQHKsfgAr5W2_VtO0DHzMeCQ.png\" alt=\"Autosave Vault Image 3\" width=\"561\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1yQc92UeqQHKsfgAr5W2_VtO0DHzMeCQ.png 561w, https:\/\/www.mediastorm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1yQc92UeqQHKsfgAr5W2_VtO0DHzMeCQ-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Open<\/strong> the appropriate <strong>file.<\/strong>         <\/p>\n<p>You should now have two projects open in the Final Cut Browser window.<\/p>\n<p>Though Final Cut Pro renames your backup file with a timestamp, it does not alter the sequences or file names inside. Therefore, when copying between projects it\u2019s very easy to get confused as to which project you are actually working in.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid confusion, in the <strong>Browser<\/strong>, drag the <strong>backup project window<\/strong> next to your main project so they are side-by-side.<\/p>\n<p>To copy between projects, simply <strong>select<\/strong> an item in the <strong>backup<\/strong> and <strong>press command-c<\/strong> to copy it. Next, <strong>select<\/strong> your <strong>working project<\/strong> and press <strong>command-v<\/strong> to paste the item(s) into your project.<\/p>\n<p>You can drag-and-drop between files but we\u2019ve found that copy-and-paste tends to be faster and more reliable, particularly with large sequences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save<\/strong> your work. Then, <strong>close<\/strong> the <strong>backup project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h1>Copying Items From a Backup Sequence to a Sequence in Your Working Project<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Select<\/strong> the <strong>Timeline (command-3)<\/strong>. Then, close any open sequences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Double click<\/strong> a <strong>sequence<\/strong> from your working project.<\/p>\n<p>Next, select the backup project you\u2019d like to open. Add the <strong>suffix &#8216;backup&#8217;<\/strong> to the sequence. This will avoid the confusion of opening two sequences with the exact same name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paste<\/strong> from your <strong>backup sequence<\/strong> to your <strong>working sequence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save<\/strong> your work. Then, <strong>close<\/strong> the <strong>backup project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If necessary, <strong>delete<\/strong> your original <strong>sequence<\/strong>. Then, <strong>remove the &#8216;backup&#8217; suffix<\/strong> from the <strong>replacement sequence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>Replacing Your FCP Project File with a Backup File<\/h1>\n<p>In the <strong>Finder<\/strong>, locate your <strong>project folder<\/strong>.
