We spent a week following two amazing young women, Rose Kollie and Tina Tyron, both of whom were beneficiaries of A.I.R\u2019s program in the Gokai and Golai school systems.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19130\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19130\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-19-at-2.45.05-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19130\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-19-at-2.45.05-PM.png\" width=\"510\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tina Tyron, Rose Kollie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Ebola outbreak <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-28755033\" target=\"_blank\">hit Liberia hard in 2014<\/a>, but we\u2019re happy to report that both Rose and Tina are safe, healthy and still in school.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kathryn Fleming, who is currently the Deputy Chief of Party for the USAID\/Quality Reading Program, and who worked directly with Rick and I while in Liberia gave us the update on the girls, as well as their programs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Kathryn, A.I.R\u2019s education programs in Gokai and Golai were outside of the Ebola hot zones, and were relatively unaffected. Schools remained open and no one from A.I.R\u2019s staff, or their families were affected by the disease.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rose was recently promoted to 7th grade, and Tina is currently in 6th. Both, according to A.I.R staff, are \u201cinfluential girls in their communities\u201d.
