Many of their courses are free and self-directed. News University is a joint project between the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Poynter Institute. <\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 0px;  margin-bottom: 4px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/poynter.org\/seminar\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/poynteronline.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"34\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Speaking of Poynter- if you\u2019d rather attend a \u201clive\u201d course, the <a href=\"http:\/\/poynter.org\/seminar\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\">Poynter Institute<\/a> has seminars in St. Petersburg, FL, throughout the year covering many of those same topics.  Classes are kept small and focused, with both Poynter faculty and working journalists coming in to teach.  If you\u2019re free in September, they have a course coming up on <a href=\"http:\/\/poynter.org\/seminar\/seminar_view.asp?int_seminarID=4262\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\">Multimedia Reporting in Teams: New Tools &#038; Techniques.<\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px;  margin-bottom: 4px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mediabistro.com\/courses\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/mediabistro.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"74\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>If you can\u2019t make it down to St. Pete, <a href=\"http:\/\/mediabistro.com\/courses\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\">MediaBistro<\/a> offers courses both online and in various locations across the US- mostly New York and Los Angeles, but they\u2019ll also be hitting DC, San Francisco, and Boston this summer.  Many of their seminars are geared towards writers, but they throw a few design and photography courses in there (of course, I\u2019m sure most of us, myself included, could also benefit from sessions such as  <a href=\"http:\/\/mediabistro.com\/courses\/cache\/crs2783.asp\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\">\u201cGrammar, Punctuation, and Meaning.\u201d<\/a>) Courses range from 15 minute online sessions, to 8 week Boot Camps.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 0px;  margin-bottom: 4px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lynda.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mediastorm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/lynda.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"92\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>And finally, if you just need to brush up on your software skills, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/lynda.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"tag\">Lynda.com<\/a>.  They have an online training library with tutorials for everything from Final Cut Pro to Blogger.
