Gaining access to secretive pockets of society is based on trust. It\u2019s that trust that photographer Anthony Karen<\/a> sees as the foundation of photojournalism. \u201cIt\u2019s a moment that\u2019s constantly validated, the wordless acceptance into someone\u2019s personal space with a camera,\u201d Karen wrote to Slate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After documenting Vodou rituals<\/a> in Haiti, Skinheads<\/a>, and the Westboro Baptist Church<\/a>, Karen finds himself accepted by the Ku Klux Klan. He began photographing the Klan in 2005, after reaching out to members through phone numbers and e-mails listed on websites. After earning their trust, he was allowed unrestricted access to photograph.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

His efforts have been published in his book White Pride<\/a><\/em> and led to a collaboration with the Discover Channel on the documentary KKK: Beneath the Hood<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n
