I am a slow typer. I dread transcriptions, something we do at MediaStorm for every interview.<\/p>\n

Recently I discovered an alternative that’s built right into Apple’s Mountain Lion operating system: dictation. It\u2019s quick, easy and most importantly, pretty darn accurate. <\/p>\n

To turn on dictation select the \uf8ff > System Preferences…<\/strong> then choose Dictation & Speech<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the Dictation<\/strong> tab click the On<\/strong> radio button. <\/p>\n

Choose a shortcut key to trigger dictation. I use the suggested fn<\/strong> key on my MacBook Air. <\/p>\n

Finally, select your language. <\/p>\n

Transcribing<\/h2>\n

To begin dictation open TextEdit or another text editor. Our application of choice is Barta Technologies\u2019 $29.99 Transcrivia<\/a>. (Built-in dictation does not work with Google Docs.) <\/p>\n

Then double click your trigger key. A microphone icon will appear.<\/p>\n

Dictate a sentence or two, then press your trigger key once again.<\/p>\n

The microphone icon changes to a set of colored circles as the system processes your words. Then, you\u2019ll see them appear in your editor.<\/p>\n

Caveats<\/h2>\n

In order to use dictation, you\u2019ll need to be connected to the internet. One of the reasons it\u2019s accurate is that Apple deciphers your speech on their computers. If you\u2019re dictating sensitive material you may want to look for an alternate method.<\/p>\n
