The LA Times recently launched a new multimedia feature: I C U: Los Angeles Connections, exploring the "missed connections" section of Craigslist. Updated weekly with new stories, video-journalist Katy Newton looks into stories behind the postings.  If you're in the LA area and looking for singles, don't miss the map- you can see where the concentrations of singles are, by both gender and age. This is a pretty great use of multimedia to explore community connections, worth checking out.

Talking to the Taliban

The Globe and Mail has created another stunning multimedia presentation, Talking to the Taliban. From their site: A portrait of average Taliban fighters in Kandahar has emerged from a research project by The Globe and Mail. An interviewer gained unprecedented access to insurgent groups in five districts of the province, and emerged from the dangerous assignment with 42 video recordings of fighters answering a standardized list of questions. It's a unique look at Canada's front-line opponents in the war. Vernetta Cockerham-Ellerbee's husband made good on threats to kill her family when he stabbed to death her teenage daughter Candice in 2002. Cockerham-Ellerbe had begged police to lock him up. In a lawsuit, she's asking them to pay for failing to protect her. Our Hidden PoorThe Chicago Tribune published a special report, Our Hidden Poor, with an audio slideshow In their own voices. Tens of thousands of families confront what often amounts to a daily struggle, if not for survival then at least for dignity. And their troubles unfold mostly out of sight, in barren apartments, soulless shelters or overflowing trailers.
