From my perspective here in London, I’ve been following developments in US newspapers with interest, as similar processes are at work here – large staff layoffs and painful changes are underway, (several UK papers are ‘restructuring’…by laying off their visual staff…obviously we have geniuses at the top…) with more changes to come on the horizon.
For a while its been pretty clear to me that photojournalists in particular need a broader skillset to compete in the developing digital storytelling / imagery market.
Due to an injury (I broke my leg while shooting video…new opportunities eh? Doh!) I have some time on my hands for a while, and would like to spend some of it learning new stuff.
I’m well experienced in Photoshop, have been using Final Cut Pro for a while and will be dipping into Flash soon, but I was wondering if you could list or briefly outline what you would regard as essential skills?
Thanks.
I have a friend in Australia and the same thing is happening over there. Large scale layoffs, restructuring, consolidation of media and photographer like him are scrambling to stand out from the crowd by learning multimedia and avoiding the ax. I think this is a worldwide phenomenon and as the world gets smaller and smaller we’re going to see it become more homogenized.
